What It Means for Me to Seek First the Kingdom of God

Writer's picture: Herb Herb

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33

This verse has been a guiding principle in my life, but I have to continually remind myself that seeking first the Kingdom of God is not just about belief—it’s about action, priority, and trust.

1. Choosing What Comes First

Every day, I have decisions to make. Will I put my own desires, worries, and ambitions first, or will I surrender them to God’s rule? When Jesus tells me to seek first the Kingdom, He is asking me to align my life under His authority, making His will my greatest pursuit. It’s not about adding God to my agenda—it’s about making Him the center of everything.

2. Daily Surrender

Seeking first the Kingdom is not a one-time commitment; it’s something I must do daily. I have to choose to start my day in God’s presence, to hear His voice above the noise, and to make His Word the foundation of my decisions. When I do this, I find peace, clarity, and confidence in knowing that I am walking in alignment with Him.

3. Checking My Heart

It’s easy to say I am seeking God, but what do my actions reveal? Do I really desire His rule in my life, or do I still hold on to control? Seeking first His righteousness means that I don’t just pursue what’s good for me—I pursue what’s right in His eyes. It means I examine my motives, surrender my pride, and trust that His ways are always better than mine.

4. Trusting His Promise

Jesus promises that if I seek first His Kingdom and righteousness, all these things will be added to me. He knows what I need—whether it’s provision, direction, or strength—and He has never failed to provide. Yet, I have to remind myself not to chase after what He will add but to stay focused on the seeking. When I keep my heart set on Him, the rest falls into place.

Living This Out

For me, seeking first the Kingdom means:

   •       Putting God at the center of my thoughts, actions, and decisions.

   •       Starting my day in His presence before anything else.

   •       Trusting Him with my needs instead of worrying.

   •       Choosing righteousness over convenience or comfort.

   •       Remembering that He is my source, not the world.

This is not always easy, but I know that living any other way leads to striving and frustration. When I truly seek first His Kingdom, I experience peace, provision, and purpose beyond what I could ever achieve on my own.

So today, I choose again to seek first. Not as a religious duty, but as a life-giving pursuit. Because in Him, I lack nothing.
