“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
Colossians 3:1-2 NIV
The failure of believers to follow the teaching of Colossians 3:1-2 is a foundational cause of spiritual defeat and a diminished witness to the world. This verse exhorts us to set our hearts and minds on “things above,” reflecting our new identity in Christ and our eternal hope in Him. However, many believers remain fixated on earthly identities defined by culture, achievements, failures, and circumstances, leading to a life of uncertainty and spiritual stagnation.
An earthly identity is fragile, rooted in the temporary and ever-changing aspects of life—social status, material possessions, career success, and human relationships. It often seeks validation from fleeting sources like accomplishments, personal image, or the opinions of others. This focus creates an unstable foundation for life, leading to anxiety, striving, comparison, and inevitable disappointment when these things fail to deliver lasting meaning or fulfillment. Living from an earthly identity blinds us to the eternal reality and purpose God has for us, leaving us vulnerable to a sense of purposelessness and despair.
In contrast, our heavenly identity is secure, eternal, and unshakable. Through our union with Christ, we are declared children of God, co-heirs with Christ, and new creations who share in His resurrection life. This identity transcends our circumstances and is grounded in the unchanging truth of God’s Word. By setting our hearts on “things above,” we align ourselves with God’s perspective, allowing us to live with peace, confidence, and purpose. This mindset transforms how we approach challenges, relationships, and our role in advancing God’s Kingdom on earth. Rather than striving for worldly validation, we walk in the assurance of God’s love and our heavenly inheritance.
This heavenly focus also carries a profound future hope. Colossians 3:4 reminds us, “When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” This promise assures believers of a future that is secure, glorious, and filled with purpose. Fixing our minds on this hope strengthens us to endure trials and remain steadfast in faith, knowing that our ultimate destiny is with Christ in His eternal Kingdom. This vision stands in stark contrast to the hopelessness and uncertainty that comes from clinging to earthly identity. Without the anchor of a heavenly focus, people are left to face life’s uncertainties with fear and despair, often chasing temporary solutions that fail to address the deeper need for eternal meaning.
Following the exhortation of Colossians 3:1-2 enables believers to live with a Kingdom perspective that impacts every area of life. It frees us from the tyranny of earthly concerns, transforms our relationships, and fuels our mission to reflect Christ to a world desperately in need of hope. By shifting our focus from the temporary to the eternal, we not only find stability and peace in the present but also walk boldly into the future, confident in the promises of God and our identity as His redeemed children. This mindset empowers us to live victoriously and leaves a legacy of faith and hope for others to follow.
