Matthew 1:23 declares the stunning reality of “Immanuel,” which means “God with us.” For me, this verse has gone far beyond being a beautiful Christmas sentiment. It has become a life-altering revelation of God’s eternal plan to dwell in and through us. This truth unveils the heart of the Gospel: God has forever united Himself with humanity through Jesus Christ, and now through the Holy Spirit, He has made us His dwelling place.
Jesus, born of a virgin, came to earth clothed in human flesh and anointed by the Holy Spirit to fulfill His mission (Luke 4:18-19). He lived and ministered not as God operating independently, but as a man fully surrendered to the Holy Spirit. Acts 10:38 reminds us, “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and He went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with Him.” What stands out to me is how Jesus modeled for us what it means to live a Spirit-filled life. He showed that the same anointing He carried is now ours through the indwelling Holy Spirit.
As we step into a new year, let us remember that in Christ, we are new creations. Paul writes, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). This year represents a fresh beginning, a renewed opportunity to live in the reality of Immanuel—God with us. May this truth not remain an abstract idea but permeate every aspect of our lives. Let us embrace the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to guide, empower, and renew us daily.
Matthew 1:23 was never meant to be just a beautiful Christmas verse for us to revisit each December. It is a forever realization of the new creation God was crafting by putting His Spirit in us. When Jesus ascended, He didn’t leave us as orphans. He fulfilled His promise to send the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, who now dwells in me—and in all who believe (John 14:16-17). This truth has transformed how I see myself and others. We are now temples of the living God (1 Corinthians 6:19), carriers of His presence.
To be “in Christ” means to live in His anointing. The word “Christ” itself means “Anointed One.” Paul said, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). This truth resonates deeply with me because it means I’m not only forgiven and redeemed but also empowered. Christ in me is the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). As a Kingdom citizen, I know that I carry His presence, power, and authority wherever I go.
God is forever with us, and in Christ, I am a part of this incredible truth. I am His Immanuel to the world, and so are you. This new year, may we fully embrace our identity as new creations in Christ and walk in the fullness of His Spirit, bringing His Kingdom wherever we go.
